John R Palmer was the son of William Palmer and Permelia Higgs. He married Sarah A Van Eaton, daughter of Rebecca Lewis and Joshua Van Eaton, in Boone County, Indiana, on 19 Aug 1851. They had 4 known children: Joseph Finley, Charles Chester, Flora Novilla, and Ella Effie. Sarah died in 1865 soon after the birth of Ella.

In 1866 John married Alta Ray Filson in Fremont County, Iowa and they had one child, William "Willie" Palmer. John died the year following the birth of William.

John Palmer was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of Rock Bluff, Nebraska, when he enlisted as a Wagoner on 10 Nov 1862 at the age of 33 years. Mustered in Co H 2ne Nebraska Cavalry on 13 Dec 1862. Mustered out 23 Dec 1863.

NOTE: Headstone has Infantry as opposed to Cavalry.
