The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Mary Helen McInerney, formerly Sister Mary Petrina, 82, who passed away at 1:56 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9th, at Ross Hall, Mother House in Leavenworth, Kansas. Mary Helen McInerney was born on November 14, 1923, in Kansas City, Kansas, one of six children of Peter and Margaret Wall McInerney.

She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on September 1, 1941 and, as Sister Mary Petrina, made her profession of vows on March 4, 1943. After profession, Sister served the community for 31 years as an elementary teacher, and as principal in various schools throughout the west and Midwestern states. For 23 years, Sister worked for the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocesan Marriage Tribunal, helping people resolve marriage annulment cases. Sister retired to Ross Hall in May, 2004.

She was preceded in death by paternal aunts who were Sisters of Charity; Sisters Mida McInerney, Mary Ethna McInerney, Mary Patrick McInerney, Mary Patrice McInerney and Mary Senan McInerney. She was survived by two brothers, Mr. Patrick James McInerney of Topeka, Kansas, and Rev. Kieran James McInerney OSB, of St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison, Kansas; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret (Martin) McInerney, of Prairie Village, Kansas; a brother-in-law, Mr. Martin (Jane) Cummings, of Kansas City, Missouri; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; friends and her SCL community.

A vigil was held on Monday evening, May 15th, in Annunciation Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth, where friends called after 4 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection was celebrated in Annunciation Chapel on Tuesday morning, May 16th. Interment followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Chapels was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions were suggested be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund in Leavenworth, Kansas.
