Mary Jane (McInerney) Cummings, 69, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 2nd, at Baptist Medical Center. Jane Cummings was born the youngest of six children, the twin sister of Marjorie McInerney, on December 14, 1928. She was a graduate of Avila College. Jane was a teacher with the Kansas City, Missouri, School District for 20 years, worked for the City in Neighborhood Development for five years, and during the last years of her life worked for the Board of Education as a Parent Educator for the Parents as Teachers program.

When she was young, Jane traveled throughout South America and Brazil as an opera singer, and sang in the Kansas City area for many years. She worked diligently for the Democratic Party, especially the Aylward Coalition. She got the ''Stop Payment on Checks'' law passed through the Missouri Legislature in six months time. She was a member of the Ladies' Hibernian Auxiliary and was a true Irishwoman in every sense of the word. She was survived by her husband, Martin Cummings, and seven children and their spouses: Margie, Eddie, Brian, Jeannie, Kevin, Patty and Sean. She also leave 15 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Martin J. McInerney, and leaves behind her brothers and sisters: Sr. Mary Helen McInerney SCL, Patrick J. McInerney, Father Kieran J. McInerney OSB, and Marjorie McInerney.

Friends called on Thursday evening at the McGilley State Line Chapel, where the Rosary was recited later that night. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday morning, June 5th, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church at 75th and Main Streets. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. The family suggested memorial donations to the Benedictine Brazilian Fund; the Alexander Graham Bell School for the Deaf in Columbus, Ohio; or the Sisters of Charity, Leavenworth, Kansas.
