Dale's parents moved from Black Hawk county, Iowa to Beadle county, South Dakota and farmed between the communities of Bonilla and Hitchcock in Section 24, on land owned by Dale's grandfather William Chaplin. From there, the family moved to Fargo, North Dakota where his parents divorced in 1913.

The oldest two children Glen and Dale went with their father and the youngest two, a daughter Cleo and son Clair, went with their mother. Their mother's second husband, Frank W. Peterson, adopted Cleo and Clair giving them the Peterson surname.
