Wilma was the daughter of George and Lucy (Hawk Bear) American Horse. She was reared and educated at Cannon Ball and Fort Yates. She married Milton Summers in 1954, and they made their home at Cannon Ball. She was a homemaker.

At the time of her passing, Wilma was survived by her husband, Milton, three daughters and sons-in-law, five sons and two daughters-in-law, one sister, two brothers, 29 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Barbara.
