George was born August 3, 1940, at Fort Yates, North Dakota, to George and Lucy (Hawk Bear) American Horse. He was raised in Cannon Ball and attended Fort Yates High School. He loved dogs, and would do anything to protect them. He enjoyed reading and watching TV, going for his morning walks with his dogs. He encouraged family to walk and drink water for health. He was also a fan of Elvis and liked to sing Elvis songs. He claimed to be a Marine, but his brother was really a WWII veteran–Matthew American Horse, and his mother was a Gold Star Mother. George is the last of Lucy's children.
