GIBSON — Grover C. "G.C" Odom , 97, of Gibson passed away at his home on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018 with his devoted family by his side after an extended illness.

He was born in Marlboro County, S.C. on Jan. 7, 1921 youngest son of the late G.C. Odom , Sr., and Annie Stubbs Odom . He was a graduate of Gibson High School and attended Coyne Electrical Institute in Chicago. In 1941, he started a 46 year career with Seaboard Coastline Railroad and CSX in Hamlet.

G.C. was the oldest serving member of the Gibson United Methodist Church. He and Sadie celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary at the church in June 2015.

In addition to his parents, G.C. was preceded in death by four sisters, Geneva Hilburn, Lois Johnson, Wixie Stadler, Janice Stubbs and two brothers, J.B. Odom and Francis Odom .

He is survived by his loving wife of 77 years, Mrs. Sadie Lytch Odom of the home in Gibson; his daughter, Jean Hope Odom Yates of Asheboro; two sons, G.C. Odom III (Buck) of Longs, S.C.; Douglas Lytch Odom of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Marguerite Aycoth of Clemmons; six grandchildren, Kelly Maher and Brittnie Edwards (Trellis) of Albemarle; Brad "Boo" Odom (Anna) and Andy Odom of Rockingham; Erick Odom (Collette) of Raleigh; Emily Rainwarter (Brandon) of Southport and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at the Gibson United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Butson and Rev. Pat Butson. A private interment will be at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12 at Richard Boles Funeral Service in Laurinburg.
