Wallace Goodrich

Wallace was the son of Harriet Maria Taggart and George Albert Goodrich.

It was nearing the fourth of July. Merrell Ward was planning a grand celebration. Everything was going along fine when Aunt Eliza's eleven year old daughter, Esther, came down with diphtheria. There was only one doctor in Ashley Valley and he didn't have access to antitoxin. Little Esther died.

Four of Wallace's siblings would get the disease and die as well as himself. Wallace's brother, Albert Gardner, got it next. He was sick but survived. As soon as Albert Gardner was strong enough, he went to the mill to take his father's place as he was needed by Harriet and Eliza.

Sister Fanny took the dreaded disease next and died. She was twenty years old and engaged to be married to a fine young man. Will was fourteen years old and a good-sized boy. He took sick and died. Louise, twelve years old, and Hyrum, age ten, took sick and died the same day. They were buried in the same grave. Soon Wallace died at the age of eight.
