Georgia M. Petersen, 86, of St. Paul died Friday, May 24, 2019 at Brookefield Park in St. Paul.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 7, 2019 at Jacobsen-Greenway-Dietz Funeral Home in St. Paul. Roger Grim will officiate.

The family will have a private family inurnment.


Georgia was born September 10, 1932 in North Star, NE to Edwin and Rose (Combs) Knapp.

She attended rural school in North Star to the eighth grade and then attended Fullerton High School where she graduated in 1949. She received her teaching degree from Business College in Central City. Georgia returned to North Star where she taught for two years in the rural school which she attended.

She was united in marriage to Robert Petersen on June 4, 1952 in Grand Island. The couple lived in various communities during the early part of their marriage before moving to Grand Island. Robert and Georgia moved to a farm near Nysted in 1971 where they lived until moving to St. Paul in 2011.

Georgia was very close to her sons and she and her daughter, Jackie, were like sisters. She was a very good cook; making pies, cakes and other desserts and canning pickles. She liked to travel, go out to eat and play slot machines. She took part in the Grundlovsfest in Dannebrog making Aebleskivers.

She was a member of the Ladies Aid at St. Peder’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nysted.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of St. Paul; a son, Brad Petersen of Grand Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Jim Gawrych of St. Paul; a daughter-in-law, Trish Petersen of Phillips; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Shirley Knapp of North Carolina; a sister, Betty D’arcy of Anaheim, CA.; two sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law, Aletha & Leon Piepho of Lincoln and Linda & Leland Petersen of Stromsburg and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Clay Petersen; brother, Lyle Knapp and his wife, Jean; two sisters, Laura Short and her husband Jim and Evelyn Evers and her husband August; step-brother, Wayne Perry and his wife Irene and a brother-in-law, John D’arcy.
