Mr. Knapp was born Nov. 15, 1920 in Nance County to Edwin and Rose (Combs) Knapp.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Helen J. Knapp of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Pat Knapp of Hershey; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Bill Scheideler of Lincoln, Mary Jo and La Moine Smith of Minden; four sisters, Evelyn Evers of Fullerton, Betty D'Arcy of Orange, Calif., Laura Short of Fayetteville, N.C., and Georgia Petersen of Dannebrog; and a brother, Carl Knapp of Oroville, Ariz.
Additional survivors include grandchildren, Lisa Thew, Pamela Knapp, Jon Knapp, Thomas Knapp, Scott Burtle, Ben Burtle, Sydney Mroczek, Adam Mroczek, Molly Mroczek; and three great-grandchildren.
He grew up in Nance County, graduating form Fullerton High School. He served four years in the Army Air Corps achieving the rank of T/Sgt. He was a crew chief in the South Pacific Theater and throughout WWII was a B-29 mechanic.
He was united in marriage to Helen J. Eychner on Sept. 27, 1947 at Hildreth. He farmed in the Timber Creek area before moving to Palmer, grand Island and Longmont, Colo. The family returned to farm in Nance County in 1962. He retired from farming in 1976. The couple made their home in Grand Island.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, American Legion and VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a half brother, Wayne Perry, brothers-in-law, Augie Evers, John D'Arcy and Wilbert Short.
