Alvarine Broadway Hartwell passed away while sleeping on September 15, at 8:30 a.m. in her San Diego, California home. Alvarine’s, VITAS Hospice nurse and a caretaker from The Clairemont Guest Home were by her side during final moments.
Alvarine lived most of her life in the state of Tennessee, having been born in Fayetteville, a few minutes before her sister, Aline Broadway Harris on November 21, 1926.
Alvarine and her twin sister graduated from Central High School and from Andrew Jackson Business University. Together, they enjoyed working for the same company, National Life Insurance, for several years. Alvarine then spent a good part of her career as a data processor at Bridgestone/Firestone in Memphis, Tennessee, retiring in 1981. As a single career woman, Alvarine also enjoyed many activities, including competitive bowling, swimming, traveling, playing with her Pug dog, “J.P.” and spending lots of quality time with nieces and nephews.
After retiring, Alvarine reunited with her Korean War Veteran sweetheart from the 1940s who had been recently widowed from a 30-year marriage. Wyeth and Alvarine were married in 1982 and lived in San Diego, California from 1983 to 1994. In 1994, they moved back to the state in which they originally met and dated, settling together just a few blocks from her twin, Aline and her husband, Harold Harris in Nashville, Tennessee. While in Nashville, Alvarine and Wyeth enjoyed attending Belmont Heights Baptist Church, many Korean War and World War II Reunions and traveling abroad. They regularly played their favorite card game, “SkipBo,” with friends and family.
When Alvarine’s husband, Wyeth passed at the age of 90 on August 26, 2015, Alvarine was welcomed by her seven stepchildren to spend the rest of her days in San Diego, California. She moved into The Clairemont Guest Home where she met many friends while enjoying excellent care by the staff and volunteers.
Alvarine was the last remaining of eight Broadway offspring, including her twin sister, Aline Broadway Harris who died on November 5, 2014 and another cherished sister, Maxie Lee, who passed on August 7, 2015.
Alvarine is survived by 7 stepchildren, 12 great-stepchildren and 8 great-great-stepchildren on the West Coast. She will also be deeply missed on the East Coast by 10 nieces and nephews, 20+ grandnieces/nephews, 15+ great-grandnieces/nephews plus a multitude of friends and admirers.
An open memorial service will be held on September 29th, 2:00pm, at the First Baptist Church on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. where she attended while in San Diego, CA.
A private graveside burial service for family and close friends will be held on October 20th, 10:00am, at the McClaran Cemetery in Murfeesboro, Tennessee where Alvarine will be laid to rest next to her twin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to “The Alvarine B. Hartwell Living Trust.” Contributions will be distributed to The Clairemont Guest Home and VITAS Hospice.
