Elsie Jane, daughter of Alvin B. Miller and Effie Pinkston, was born May 3, 1904 in Pawnee County, Kansas. Elsie came with her parents to Kiowa County in 1907 and lived on a farm located southwest of Greensburg.
On April 23, 1924, Elsie married Wentzle A. Stewart in Pratt in a double ceremony with her cousin Opal Miller and Howard Lewis. Elsie and Wentzle lived on a farm northeast of Greensburg until October 1945 when they moved into Greensburg. They first lived in a house located next door, to the north, of their modern brick home located at 405 South Grove Street in Greensburg. This new home has an "S" design in the stone and brick near the front door.
In 1933, Wentzlte and Elsie, along with their friends the Guptons and the Fleeners, attended the World's Fair in Chicago, Illinois.
Elsie and Wentzle were the parents of 3 sons:
1. Wesley "W. E." Stewart, for much of his adult life was a resident of Greensbug, Kiowa County, Kansas until a devastating F-5 tornado destroyed most of Greensburg on May 4, 2007. W. E. then moved to Pratt, Kansas.
2. Harold Alvin Stewart, geologist, graduate of Kansas State University, resident of Midland, Texas. Harold married Kathleen Murphy. They had children; Melody (Bowden), Mark, Wade and Eric.
3. Keith A. Stewart, was born in 1938. He died in Florida in 2006. Keith has one son, Matthew, residence California. Matthew has two children.
In 1934, Elsie and Wentzle were very involved in organizing Kiowa County farm programs for men and women. Elsie was active in church and community affairs as a member of the First Christian Church, Royal Neighbors Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, was a past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge, Alpha Study Club, Sunflower E. H. U. and Kiowa County Historical Society.
On October 25, 1945 Elsie, Wentzle and their family moved into a house in Greensburg located at 401 S. Grove Street. This house was probably built before 1920. On March 3, 1956, construction was started on a new home located next door at 405 S. Grove Street. The head carpenter was J. N. Stringer. Note that this writer is a grandson of Elsie's brother Orlo Miller. Elsie had a sparkle in her eyes. She had a great personality and sense of humor, a great deal like her brothers Orlo, Bernie, Harvey and Marvin. At present time I can only conclude it was from a positive family environment and how they were raised. Elsie always gave everyone the impression that she was a person with a great energy. She would sometimes try to kiss the smaller kids, so we invented a name for her, "the kissing bandit." As stated above, Elsie and Wentzle's newer house was built in 1956. Though this house wasn't huge, their was something about the design and floor plan with it's large kitchen, it just seemed so modern. Also, this house was so clean, perfectly arranged and decorated it looked like a house from any home magazine of that time. And if you think that's an exaggeration, think again. In September 2007, my mother and I saw Elsie and Wentzle's brick and stone home, located at 405 South Grove Street, and noticed that it was the only house standing in their neighborhood after cleanup efforts following the F-5 tornado that destroyed most of Greensburg on the evening of May 4, 2007. I didn't recognize the house at first, but my mom did. Sure enough, there was the inlaid stone or brick "S" near the front door. We stepped inside, but for safety purposes, only briefly. The walls appeared to be undamaged, but a small part of the roof was damaged or gone and was now temporarily covered. Son W. E. Stewart, who owned the house at the time of the tornado, sold it and moved to Pratt, Kansas. It is said that the new owner plans to repair this house. We all certainly hope so because to us it will always be the beautiful family home of Elsie and Wentzle Stewart.
