Family notes state that Effie Pinkston was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and her parents were George Gatewood Pinkston and Mary Jane (Gardener) Pinkston of Larned, Kansas.

Effie Pinkston married Alvin B. Miller on Wednesday, April 8, 1903. They were married by Probate Judge J. J. Stockman at his office in Larned. Alvin's brother, Calvin, and Calvin's future bride, Clara Blakeslle, were present. Effie and Alvin lived on a farm located southeast of Larned.

Effie had several items that she prepared and became known for. She made her own bread, sometimes stirring in a little oatmeal. Another was her carrot, pineapple and jello salad, sometimes referred to as "Sunshine salad." Effie's daughter-in-law, Neva, made it for many years. Effie's grandaughter, Vada (Miller) Barnes, and Vada's daughter, Karen, still make this salad today (2012). Vada loved her grandmother's fried potatoes which were spinkled with pepper. Effie was known for baking a date-nut cake around Thanksgiving, wrapping it up in some way, placing it under the bed and serving it at Christmas. Somehow the cake would become moist over that period of time.

Effie and Alvin had children:

1. Elsie Jane Miller, married Wentzel Stewert.
2. Daisy Ellen Miller (born 6-3-1905, died 9-1-1978), married Charles Weedmark (born 5-4-1896, died 1-6-1990), residence in Rosemead, Los Angeles, California.
3. Roy Allen Miller
4. Orlo Alvin Miller, married Neva L. Wheeler.
5. Maggie May Miller, married Kimberly, m. (2) Reas Axtell.
6. Marvin Ross Miller, married Daisy Filner.
