Comfort Chaffee, b. March 9, 1756, Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts. d. Feb. 23, 1828, Berkshire, Franklin, Vermont. He was the son of Nathaniel Chaffee, Jr. and Ruth Mansfield. He married Sept. 25, 1781, at Grafton, Massachusetts, Lucy Stow, b. April 30, 1758, Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts. d. March 23, 1845, Berkshire, Franklin, Vermont. She was the daughter of David Stow and Lucy Goodnow, and widow of Reuben Hoyt (married June 20, 1779, Grafton, Worcester, Mass).
Comfort Chaffee was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He filed for pension benefits while living in Berkshire on April 23, 1818 and it states that he was a private in Captain North's Co., Colonel Jackson's Regiment, Massachusetts line from May 19, 1777 and was discharged May 20, 1780. The pension file says that he was in the Battles of Monmouth and Rhode Island. The Berkshire Chaffee genealogy also quotes from "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution" and shows other terms of service beginning in 1776. The Chaffee genealogy states that he at one time was assigned to General Washington's staff to transport his tent and baggage.
He bought land at Clarendon, Rutland, Vermont in Oct. 1783, and appears on the 1790 Census of Clarendon. Some of his children were born there. The first deed for land at Berkshire was dated June 26th, 1801. He bought more land at Berkshire on July 24, 1801. However, he did not settle at Berkshire until March, 1802. He was the first tavern-keeper at Berkshire and "drove the first pair of horses and first double wagon ever used in town. "
