Thomas Mathew Cook was born 21 April 1924 in Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma, US. He was the son of Robert Kates Cook (26 Dec 1874 - 27 Jan 1946, s/o Thomas Christopher Cook and Arabella Austin) and Bertha May Ellison (21 Apr 1887 - 26 Mar 1982, d/o Matthew Greenlee Ellison and Effie Blanche Lauderdale).

As a boy "Tommy" moved with his family from Sayre to Ponca City, Kay Co., OK where according to Tom's sister Ernestine Becke, his father worked as a mail carrier and also helped out at the police department among other jobs. Thomas served in the US Navy Pacific Fleet during WWII and US Army. Later he worked in a bank in Ponca City and then sold furniture as a career both in Ponca City and subsequent to his move with Betty to Amarillo shortly after their marriage.

Thomas was a loving husband and father and was highly regarded by friends and family. He had three children: 1)a son Robert M. "Cook" Awalt who he had with Shirley Ann Hazen (born 14 July 1933 in Ponca City, Kay, OK, d/o James Walter Hazen and Beulah Mae Patterson); Thomas married Betty Jo Turner, d/o John Silas Turner and Helen Opal Lewis, in Ponca City and had 2) Lisa Ann who married Jerry Moore of Amarillo, and 3) Debra Lynn Davis.

Thomas Mathew Cook died in Amarillo, Potter Co., Texas on 25 May 1979 of cancer and was buried at the Llano Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas on 29 May 1979.
