Born in Cross/Ponca City, Kay County, OK, she graduated from Ponca City High School in 1951.
Shirley attended nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital College in Ponca City while working at Paris's Furniture store in Ponca City.
She eventually located to Ventura, CA where a sister Ruth was living with her husband Clarence White.
In 1954 she moved with her husband L.A. Awalt, a pertolium engineer, to the northern CA and settled in the Sacramento area/Elk Grove where she remained for the rest of her life. She and Arch divorced in 1971.
Shirley loved golfing and traveling. She was blessed to visit Hawaii, Europe and, of course, many return visits to her native Oklahoma.
Meaningful Relationships/Marriages:
1. Thomas Matthew Cook, son of Robert Kates Cook and Bertha May Ellison Cook of Ponca City, Kay, OK.
Child: Robert Mitchell Awalt born 1953, Ventura, CA and later adopted by L.A. Awalt.
2. L. A. "Arch" Awalt, son of Robert Harvey Awalt and Ellie Claire Skinner Awalt of Carlsbad, Eddy, NM.
Child: Rececca Ann Awalt Manning born 1955 in Woodland, CA.
Shirley died peacefully with family at her side at eight o'clock in the morning on 7/31/15 at Sutter General Hospital, Sacramento.
She leaves behind to mourn her loss two children (above), six grand children (Bart and Erick Maita; Michael, Alicia, Emma and Annabelle Awalt, six great grand children, and one great-great grand child.
Her wish was that her remains be cremated and scattered in the sea offshore from Marin County, CA.
