William C. Babcock was born about 1829 in Dallas County, Alabama, the son of Joseph Babcock, of Leyden, Massachusetts, and Ann Eliza Curtis Babcock of Georgia. In the 1850 census for Cahaba, Dallas County, Alabama, William is listed as a warehouse keeper, and in the 1860 census he is listed as a clerk. He was deemed medically unfit for service in the field by doctors who did however say he could perform other duties. He was assigned to Depot#2 in Dallas County, Alabama, assisting Capt. Reeder Manning with issues of "tax in kind". With tax in kind, citizens could pay the taxes they owed with goods and services, largely food, food used to supply the Confederate army. After the war, William was a farmer and a merchant and he never married. He died in Mitchell's in Dallas County and is buried in Mitchell's. It appears that Mitchell's was a precinct in Dallas County. His death certificate does not mention the exact location of his burial.
