Joseph B. Babcock was born in Alabama in 1831. He was the son of Joseph Babcock of Leyden, Massachusetts and Ann Eliza Curtis Babcock of Georgia. The family lived in Cahawba, Dallas County, Alabama. Joseph B. Babcock was working as a telegraphist according to the 1850 census and in the 1860 census he was working as a merchant. Early in 1861 the "Cahaba Rifles" formed and became Company F, 5th Alabama Infantry. Joseph was elected 3rd Lieutenant of Company F. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 27 April 1862 and then promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 12 May 1862. He was killed at the Battle of Gaines' Mill, Virginia on 27 June 1862. The location of his burial is unknown and he is likely buried in an unmarked grave.

He was initially buried in Hollywood Cemetery, but after the war, his family moved his body likely to Live Oak Cemetery, Selma, Dallas Co., Al or New Cahaba Cemetery.
