Charles married to Mary Gertrude Gridley on 1 September 1943 at Ithaca, New York. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and a 1945 graduate of Cornell University at Ithaca. Charles Moore Allaben, Jr., Ithaca, died October 25, 2013. He was 89.
Charles was born in Binghamton, NY, January 16, 1924 to Dr. Charles M. and Fanny Jackson Allaben.
He attended Cornell University School of Engineering, and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and the Big Red Marching Band.
He served with the Sea Bees in WWII as a draftsman and band leader from 1943-1946, serving in the European and Asiatic theatres.
Charles was a research and design engineer for Morse Chain Company for over 30 years, garnering 11 patents.
He was the last surviving member of the Melotones of Ithaca, whose members included Kenneth "Doc" Small, Wally Thirll, George Reed and Harold "Cookie" Cook. He played many instruments, and may best be known for his mastery of the vibes and trombone. Ever the musician he was playing the piano nearly to the end of his life. He arranged music and directed many "Jazz by the Lake" big band concerts.
He was a life member of the Savage Club of Ithaca. He was a charter member of the Ithaca Concert Band, serving many years on its board.
Like many members of his family he was an artist, who inspired the work of his daughter, Karen Confer. He will be remembered for his love of music, inquiring mind, wry sense of humor, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by children, Karen (John) Confer, Brooktondale, Craig (Rebecca Fisher) Allaben, Amherst, MA and Alisande (Gordon McIntosh) Allaben, Morris, MN; sister, Betty (David) Buttrick; sister-in-law, Emma Jane O'Brien, Ithaca; brother-in-law, Robert Schirmer; grandchildren, Jonah (Marissa) Allaben, Hannah Allaben, Hadley McIntosh, Alex McIntosh; step-grandchildren, Yami (Davida) Baker and children, Mishira (Paul) Baker and children; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Gridley Allaben; his sisters, Ruth (Charles) Ives, Alice (Darwin) Wales, Anne (James) Farrell; sister-in-law, Lillian Gridley Schirmer and step-grandchild, Ri Baker.
A memorial is being planned for a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ithaca Concert Band, Beechtree Care Center, or Hospice Care.
