Lars was born to Borre and Birthe (Torkilsdatter) Olen at Fåberg (Lillehammer) Norway on August 22, 1857. He came with his family to America and settled in Wisconsin. When he was 20 years old he engaged in the shoe business in LaCrosse, WI.
On May 21, 1881 he married Lise Larsen and they were the parents of 5 children: Ben (1882-1955), Carl (1884-1968), Belinda (!887-1965), Levi (1889-1965) and Leonard (1893-1894). Lise died at LaCrosse on January 3, 1899.
On December 18, 1901 Lars married Inga Johansen at LaCrosse. Inga was born February 21, 1879 at Wet Coulee (Mindoro) Wisconsin; the daughter of Jens and Anna (Olson) Johansen. The family moved to Antler, Canada about 1904, where Lars homesteaded. In 1914, they moved to Velva, ND where Lars opened a shoe shop.

Leonard Alfred - August 15, 1902 to May 3, 1977. Married Margaret Wang
Thoralf Victor - May 30, 1905 to March 23, 1943. Married Rosella Roebuck
Laila Inga - August 25, 1908 to April 28, 1996. Married to Lauchlin Vollrath
Ole Rudolph - February 21, 1911 to September 15, 1988. Never married
Thelma Borghild - September 1, 1913 to April 4, 2010. Married George Surdam
Stella Ingaborg - November 17, 1916 to September 15, 2006. Married Marion "Bud" Resimius
Inga was confined to a wheel chair for many years due to paralysis, yet she remained invariable cheerful and never complained about her lot in life. She died October 31, 1922. Lars died January 22, 1927. They are buried in the Velva Cemetery.
