husband of Mary Purtill
"James L Sloan, aged 89 years, passed peacefully away at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning at his home in Sloandale. For several months his health had been failing due to the infirmities of old age, and although everything was done for his comfort that loving hands could do, he gradually declined. Being a man of kind and genial dispositon he bore his sufferings very patiently. Mr Sloan was the son of the late John and Susan McFadden Sloan, pioneer residents of Oil Creek township, and was born at the Sloan homestead, Aug 25, 1829. Almost his entire life was spent in the vicinity of his birth, where he was well and favorably known. He helped his father clear and work the farm and also worked on the lumber rafts on the Mississippi and Allegheny rivers. Later he purchased eighty acres of land near the old homestead, on which he erected his home. He was one of a family of fourteen children, all of whom have preceded him to their final resting place, with the exception of one brother, Stephen S Sloan of New Castle, Pa. He is also survived by his wife, Mary Purtill Sloan; two sons, John S anf Fred J Sloan; five daughters, Mrs C L Tubbs, Jennie, Frances, Bertha and Irene Sloan; and three granddaughters, Eva, Josephine and Catherine Tubbs. Mr Sloan was a member of St Titus' church, at which place the funeral services will be conducted at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning. Interment will follow in St Catherine's cemetery."
