Funeral services for Charles J Nelson, 49, proprietor of the Joy Bakery, who passed away Friday morning, March 13, 1936, at his home following a two weeks' illness of pneumonia, were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, March 15, 1936, from the home. Rev A.H. Dickerson, pastor of the Methodist church, had charge of the services. A quartet composed of Glenn Greer, R.N. Noble, Joe R Stevens and Gerald Baldwin sang two numbers. Pallbearers were J.R. Braucht, George Noble, H.G. Braucht, Vurl Bean, M.B. Ballard and Maurice Poland. Burial was made in the Peniel cemetery.
Charles Julius Nelson was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, May 31, 1886. His parents passed away when he was but two years old, and he made his home with a relative. He was reared and educated in Sweden. When 12 years old he learned the bakery trade and in 1905 came to the United States and settled in Moline where he worked in a bakery shop for a number of years, later going to Chicago.
On Oct 15, 1915, Mr Nelson started his own business in Orion, Ill. He was united in marriage on March 17, 1917, to Miss Nannie Nelson at Geneseo and together they went to housekeeping in Orion where he continued to operate his bakery shop.
In 1923 he moved to Sheffield where he operated a bakery and in 1925 moved to Alexis. April 23 (or 28), 1926, Mr Nelson came to Joy where he started the Joy Bakery which he has operated successfully here during the past 10 years.
To Mr & Mrs Nelson four children were born: Charles LeRoy, Ruth Ellen, Chester Julius and Herbert Wendell, all at home.
Surviving besides the widow and children are a sister, Hilda Nelson in Sweden and an aunt Sophie ____ in Chicago, besides a large number of friends which he made in his business relationship.
