OBIT: New Castle News Dec 4, 1901 page 8Israel Van Gorder. Israel VanGorder, a well known resident of the Third ward, died at his home, No. 34 County Line street, at 1:30 o'clock Thursday evening. He was 72 years of age and lived in this county all his life. Four months ago an ingrown toe nail tarted serious trouble in one of his toes. It became necessary to amputate the affected member, but it failed to check the progress of the affection, which was of a gangrenous nature. It spread to his limbs and after suffering for four months, death came to his release. The deceased was born in Perry township, this county. He was the son of Jacob VanGordcr, one of the early settlers in this locality. Like his father, he allowed the occupation of a farmer, and became one of the most prosperous in his township. He moved to this city ten years ago, and it has since been his home. He was twice married. His second wife, who survives him, was a Miss Nancy Vance. He leaves one son which resides on the old homestead in Perry Township, and several brothers and sisters, and he is connected by marriage with a number of the prominent families of this city. Health Officer Vance is a relative of the departed. Mr. VanGorder was a United Presbyterian and lived a consistent Christian life. He was a good citizen and a successful business man, owing at his death considerable real estate in this city.
