Son of Henrik and Lina Klaveness, he was born Wilhelm Klaveness in Sandeherred, Norway according to his U. S. Naturalization paperwork. His father and grandfather built whaling ships and William went to sea at age 17 and first came to the US as an employee of Standard Oil.

At the time of his death, he was the captain of the S. S. Ceiba, a steamship of Honduras registry, owned by the Vaccaro Line. Only six of fifty people on board survived the sinking of the ship by German U-Boat, William Klaveness was not among them.

He married Ella Erikstad and had four children, sons Alfred and Odd and twin daughters Aud and Gerd.
