Monument to Lewis Seitz who died in Washington Co, PA, on his return to his home. Possibly, Lewis, traveling by horseback, left his home in Berne twp, Fairfield Co OH, returning to Shrewsbury twp, York Co PA for the "settlement of his mother's estate" and to visit family. As he was returning home, he apparently became too ill to continue, the notice of his death found by Joe & Rebecca SEITZ McKEE in 1999: "Washington, PA Examiner, pub. May 17, 1823: Died at the house of John Schaeffer in the borough of Washington on Sat. last of bilious pleurisy, Rev. Lewis Seitz, pastor of Baptist congregation near New Lancaster, Fairfield Co. O. on his return from a journey eastward, aged 56 years."
Memorial Reads:
"In memory of Lewis Seitz, born in Germany about 1763, Died in Pa. 1820. With his wife, Anna Beery, his family and his congregation he came from Rockingham Co., Va. in 1801 and founded the Pleasant Run Primitive Baptist Church which he served until his death."
Lewis, born in Baden, Germany, arrived with his parents Johannes & Catharine as a very young child on 28 April 1786 on ship Richmond at Philadelphia, PA. He would have grown up speaking German, in York Co, PA where his parents settled. Around 1801-02, before or after marriage to Anna, he moved to Rockingham Co. in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Circa 1801-02, Lewis with others from his congregation at the White House Church, moved to Fairfield Co, OH, probably because of new lands opening, but mainly due to their opposition to the slavery practiced in Virginia. Lewis became a prominent Primative Baptist minister who could preach in German and English. His Pleasant Run Church, a log meeting house located in NE Pleasant twp, was one of the four founders of Sciota Baptist Assn in 1805. The Assn. refused to correspond with churches that permitted its members to have slaves.
