MARGARET N. (HOLLEY) RUMSEY
ENFIELD - Margaret N. (Holley) Rumsey, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend, passed away on August 24, 2009 at Hospice of Ithaca surrounded by her loving family.
Surviving Margaret are four sons, Russell (Elise), Jack, Denis (DeeAnne), and Bruce (Joey) Rumsey; five daughters, Phylis Brooks, Susan (Lawrence) Carlisle, Judy Neiss, Loreta (Linda Ebert), and Marlene Crockford; 26 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two great-great granddaughters; one brother, Robert (Linda) Holley; one sister, Helena (Bill) Goodwin; several sisters- and brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Enfield on April 23, 1916, Margaret was the daughter of the late Howard and Minnie (Whitaker) Holley. A homemaker and farmer's wife for many years, Margaret was a mom/grandmother to many more than the 10 children she gave birth to. She had a heart big enough to nurture and help raise her nine younger brothers and sisters, the neighbor children who were always at her home, and almost everyone she encountered. No one stayed a stranger long after meeting Margaret. Countless people stopped at the Rumsey farm over the years to sit a spell in the kitchen or to catch a breeze on the front porch, to sample one of her homemade cookies, and to bask in one of Margaret's smiles. She loved gardening, reading, cooking, sewing, and writing personal cards and letters.
Margaret will be welcomed home by those who have passed before her, including her husband, Jared Rumsey; her son, Maynard; sons-in-law, Richard Brooks and Robert Crockford; granddaughters, Debbie Baker and Debbie Rumsey; brothers, Raymond, Francis, Harland and Richard Holley; sisters, Mildred Rumsey, Marian Lovelace, and Doris Oakley; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.
The family will be present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 28, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Trumansburg with the Rev. John Kotun officiating. A reception will follow at the Enfield Grange.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850 or the Enfield Rescue Squad, 172 Enfield Main Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
