Born Michael Nevin, he went by his Anglicized his surname. Nevin family tree information shows Michael as the oldest child of Cornelius Nevin and Catherine Malone. He married Catherine Burke in 1823 in Ireland, and they started their family of nine children with the birth of their oldest son, John, in 1824, and followed by Michael, Jr., 1827; Catherine (Kitty), 1829; Cornelius (Connor), 1830; Martin, 1833; Patrick, 1834; Edward, 1838; Thomas, 1840; and Dennis, 1843.
Michael and his family emigrated to the United States in MAY 1849 and settled on Washington Mountain located between the towns of Lee and Washington, in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He chose the site of their homestead based on geographical and climatic conditions similar to what they had in County Galway, Ireland. The elevation had to be similar for the potatoe crop.
On 20 OCT 1854, Michael, Michael Jr. (aka Big Mike), and Connor purchased three lots, totaling 75 acres, in the Lee and Washington, Massachusetts area. The family began its farm and went into the wood cutting business.
Michael succumbed to lung flu on 27 DEC 1860 at the age of 61, according to his death record or 63, according to his grave monument. Descendants of Michael and Catherine Burke Navin survive to this day throughout the United States.
