On September 5, 2018 the Comstock Cemetery Foundation unanimously approved the following action:

Because they lived, died, and were buried in Virginia City, a request is to the Comstock Cemetery Foundation Board of Directors (CCFBOD) to approve the recognition of a Nevin family plot located in the Silver Terrace Catholic Cemetery (Code List No. 874, Date C, Square Site No. 45, Last Name – Nevin, First and Middle Names – Unknown) as the final resting place of Thomas (aka Tom) Nevin (1840-1889), Katherine (aka Kate or Katie) (Donahue) Nevin (1846-1880), and Edward (aka Ed) Nevin (1838-1891). They are my 3rd great uncles and 3rd great aunt, all natives of County Galway, Ireland who immigrated to the United States between 1848 and 1854. Their grave identification markers may not have been installed or, if installed, were vandalized over the 130 years since their deaths and burials. It is also entirely possible they were buried in unmarked graves within that plot. Surveys such as an extensive one done by Father Paul Meinecke in the 1960s failed to locate their graves. Meinecke’s survey notes no identities of individuals buried in the Nevin plot at site 45. He listed the identities as unknown. Attempts to locate specific burial locations for them through research of Meinecke’s survey records and other burial information at the Comstock Cemetery Foundation, parish records at Saint Mary’s in the Mountains Catholic Church in Virginia City, and archived records of the Northern Nevada Catholic Diocese in Reno, met with negative results. Based on death records and obituaries/death notices, and/or funeral notices, I wholeheartedly believe they are buried in Site 45. I also request the CCFBOD approve the recognition for two of Thomas and Katherine’s children, Julia and Agnes; and two of Edward’s children, Dennis and Winifred, who were born and died in Virginia City or Reno, so that their lives can be properly memorialized. Thank you for your consideration and assistance with this request.

Sincerely,

Dan Nevin
