Ancestry public trees show Eliza as the daughter of a John and S. or Mary/Polly (Nevil) Shackleford. The 1850 Census shows an E. J. Shackleford living in District 1 of Shelby County, Kentucky with parents J. and P. and several siblings. Ancestry public trees indicate Eliza Shackleford married Eppy Armstrong in Kentucky in 1858. The 1860 Census shows E. H. Armstrong (age 33, born in Kentucky) living in Marion Township, Hendricks County, Indiana with wife Eliza J. (age 21) and children Mary A. (age 10), Milton (age 7), Allen (age 5), William (age 1) and Elizabeth (age 4 months). The age gap between Allen and William is the main basis for the suggestion that Milton and Allen were children of his first wife. The 1870 Census shows Hammond Armstrong (age 42) living in Union Township in Hendricks County with wife Eliza (age 29) and children Mary (age 19), Milton (age 17), Allen (age 16), Ellen (age 9), Anna (age 8), John (age 6), James (age 5), George (age 4) and Lorenzo (age 2). The 1880 Census shows Eppy H. Armstrong (age 52) living in Union Township with wife Eliza (age 46) and children William (age 20), Elizabeth E. (age 18), Nannie B. (age 16), John (age 16), James (age 14), George (age 12), Alonzo (age 11), Ezzie L. (age 8), Millie (age 6) and Thomas (age 3). The 1900 Census shows Eliza Armstrong (age 60, born in Kentucky in July 1839) as a widow living in Union Township with sons George and Alonzo (both age 28) and granddaughter Edith N. Armstrong (age 15). She is shown as the mother of 12 children with 8 living.

Lizton - Mrs. Eliza Armstrong, who moved to Underwood, Ind., two years ago, died at her home at that place last Tuesday morning. Her remains were brought here for burial. She leaves four boys - John, Jim, Lon and George, and three daughters, Mrs. John Scott, Mrs. Marion West and Mrs. Venus (sic, Vanis) Montgomery. She was the widow of Eph Armstrong.
