Atlas was the fifth son and tenth of fourteen children born to Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910) and Mary Jane Taylor (1836-1882). Interestingly, while the mythical Atlas was a giant who held the world up on his shoulders, our Atlas was a short fellow in a very tall family. (By one account his father was 6'2" by another, 6'6" and all his brothers were tall.) He made up for his short stature, however, by the size of his family. He adopted one child, and fathered fifteen! Atlas married Fannie Rebecca Davis (1874-1942) around 1894, and they had 16 children:

Rosa Ella Beachum (18 Jan. 1896-17 March 1979, m. Walter Berry Tucker), Mary I. Beachum (20 April 1897-16 Dec. 1911), Franklin Free Beachum (15 May 1899-6 Nov. 1965, twin, m. Maggie Tucker), Leonora Colen Beachum (15 May 1899-13 April 1972, twin), Allunie Frances "Fannie" Beachum (21 Aug. 1901-10 Nov. 1983, m. George W. Birmingham), Jerry Thomas Beachum (13 Feb. 1903-17 Aug. 1977), Charles Hayes Beachum (14 Feb. 1905-21 July 1990, m. Estelle Foreman), Lora Beachum (25 Nov. 1907-28 July 1965, m. George L. Carpenter), Clannie Mae Beachum (13 June 1908-26 June 1993, twin, m. W. F. Gaddy), Lannie Faye Beachum (13 June 1908-14 Feb. 1997, twin, m. Reece Sheppard, 2nd m. Coley), Wilson Barrett Beachum (19 June 1910-25 Jan. 1970, m. Lottie Edwards), Cleopatra Beachum (21 Feb. 1912, per delayed birth certificate), Bennie Tillman/Joel Beachum (12 April 1913-3 Dec. 1953), Joe LeGette Beachum (11 April 1916-10 Nov. 1989), Ceronis Beachum (27 Jan. 1918, dau.), Maude Beachum (22 Aug. 1920, m. Boyce Hugh Johnson, she was last survivor in 2004).
