Zachary Taylor Beachum was the first of fourteen children born to Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910) and his first wife Mary Jane Taylor (1836-1882) who were married 30 June 1853. His paternal grandparents were Hugh A. Beachum and his wife Zillah O'Neal; and, his maternal grandparents were William W. Taylor and his wife Sarah McLendon, all of Anson County, North Carolina.

Zachary married Emeline "Emma" Amanda Steen (1858-1937) a cousin through the Taylor line. She was daughter of Joseph Steen and his Elizabeth Ann Taylor. Zachary lived in Charlotte and South Carolina for many years, but was visiting relatives in Anson County at the time of his death. He appears to have changed the spelling of his name from Beachum to Beacham. The original ancient spelling was Beauchamp.

He and Emma had seven children: English Kendall Beacham (1878-1961, of Lowell, Gaston Co., NC, and later Elberton, Ga., who apparently changed his name to Edward in the 1920s), Mary E. Beacham (c. 1880-aft. 1930, Mrs. William A. Tilson of Hopewell, Virginia), Daniel Lee Beacham (1883-1940, of Newberry, SC), Clayton Braxton Beacham (1890-1970, of Columbus, Ga.), Fisher Carson Beacham (1892-1969, of Whitmire, SC), Anna Belle "Annie" Beacham (1894-1943, Mrs. Milam, of Clinton, SC) and Ada Amanda "Tommie" Beacham (1896-1969, Mrs. George Van Dyke, of Birmingham, Ala.).
