"An Old Settler Gone
"It is our sad duty to this week chronicle the death of Samuel S. Ricker, an old settler and highly respected citizen. The mournful intelligence of his death, which occurred Monday evening, the 5th inst., was received with profound sorrow by the many friends of the family in this community. For several months past he has been a victim of that slow but surely fatal disease, consumption, and it has been apparent for several weeks that his tenet of life would be brief.
"The bereaved family, his widow and four children, have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
"The funeral services were held at the family residence Wednesday and were attended by a large number of friends of the family. The deceased was a spiritualist, and in accord with his desire, made known shortly before his death, B.P. Cheney officiated at the funeral, making a few very appropriate remarks.
"The deceased was a native of Maine. He was born April 15th 1841. In 1864 he married Hannah Mitchell, who survives him. Immediately after his marriage he came to Minnesota, locating in Wabasha county. After a two years residence there he moved to Zumbrota, Minn., where he resided until he came to Appleton in 1878."
