She was born in Stokes County to John Harden Neal and Ollie Matthews Neal.
She was educated in Stokes County Schools, attended Guilford College, and got her Nursing Degree from City Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Ailene enjoyed her nursing career, being a homemaker, making crafts, and taking care of all her family and doing for others when she was able.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Raymond, Odell, and her twin brother, Alton; four sisters: Edna, Estell, Mary and Annie; special brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law; and two nieces: Brenda N. Welborne and Barbara Ann Goad.
Ailene is survived by two children: Walter Alan Hicks and wife Karen of Walnut Cove and Wendy Hicks Nance of King; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and many loving friends.
There will be no formal services but the family will receive friends 6-8 PM Friday, March 24, 2017 at Slate Funeral Home in King.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Neal/Tuttle Cemetery, c/o Jonathan Tuttle, 1327 Dodgetown Road, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
