Jackie D. Caffey, 78, of Dallas died peacefully at home on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, following a brief illness. An extraordinarily cheerful, generous and compassionate man with an irrepressible laugh, Jack was the embodiment of kindness and genuine love. Those who knew Jack became his friends, not just acquaintances.

Jack was born to Archie and Pearl Caffey on Dec. 29, 1937, in Colorado City, where he grew up and graduated from high school. In 1956, he entered the University of Texas where he majored in interior design, was a proud member of the Texas Longhorn Band, and met the love of his life, Barbara Nowlin, whom he married in 1965. Beginning with a full-service interior design business in Arlington, Jack's endeavors included teaching interior design at UTA and employment as an antiques dealer and interior designer at The Mews in Dallas. He served in various leadership capacities for multiple interior design organizations and won the Award of Merit from the Texas State Historical Society for the adaptive reuse of a classic Art Deco building.

Jack spent the last years of his design career as an antiques dealer and owner of The Gathering in Dallas, retiring in 2009. Jack supported causes he believed would create a better world. Jack was a member of the Dallas County Historical Commission and an active Democrat, serving as precinct chair until his death. Jack saw good in everyone, and his actions reflected his heart. He was devoted to mentoring a large family of nieces and nephews along with a host of international exchange students from several countries with whom he built lifelong relationships.
