"Phelps, N. Y. - The death of Joseph Dayton P. Scribner, occurred Saturday at his home on East Main street. He had been in failing health for the past three months. Mr. Scribner had reached the advanced age of 83 years, his last birthday being observed on February 13th of the present year. Mr. Scribner was born and received his early training in New York City. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted as a volunteer and served the four years of that conflict. On receiving his discharge, he settled in Arcadia, Wayne county, where he took up the occupation of farming. Sixteen years ago Mr. Scribner retired from active work and moved to Phelps. Through his ever genial and quiet disposition he commanded the respect of a host of friends. Mr. Scribner was a member of the General J. B. Murray Post, G. A. R. His near survivors are his widow and one son, Conklin Scribner of Buffalo; also a sister, Mrs. Martha Newton, who resides at Boston. The funeral services will be held tomorrow, Rev. C. E. Gregory of the Presbyterian church officiating."
