Gary Edward Torrey, 69, died Friday, January 22, 2016 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport. Darrell was a UMWA coal miner, retired from Westmoreland Coal Company and Cumberland River Coal. He loved to hunt and fish, but, most of all, he loved his church family. He was a member of the Deliverance Fellowship Church and also attended the Laurel Grove Community Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonas and Bessie (Hubbard) Sturgill, and a sister Linda Barnette.

Surviving are his wife, Glenda Sturgill, his children (and their spouses): Tammy (Edwin) Haney, Darrell (Lisa) Torrey, Rebecca Shook, and Michael (Antoinette) Shook; his grandchildren: John Shook, Chris Laurain, Stephen Shook, Emily Shook, Misty (Joe) Harriget, Alicia (Will) Lance, Megan (Kevin) Watkins, Darrell (Ashton) Torrey, Billy Torrey, and Jesse Torrey; 12 great grandchildren, his brothers and sisters: Raymond (Karen) Sturgill, Denita Sturgill (Jamie) Boggs, Gary Sturgill, and Wilma Holmes.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Michael Hunsucker officiating. Family and friends will gather Wednesday by 10:30 AM at the funeral home, where they then will travel in procession to Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for committal and burial services.
