Charles moved his family from Philadelphia to New York between 1820 and 1822 to 3 Reade Street near the residence of Aaron Burr and Broadway. The home of her childhood, was a refuge for authors and artists of the day such as John James Audubon and John Trumbull.

Margaret's paternal grandfather, William Harrison, was called upon to come to Philadelphia to print America's first banknotes following its independence. He had been the chief engraver for Alexander Dalrymple from 1780 to 1793. Her maternal grandfather, Porter, was a revolutionary soldier under Washington at Trenton and was one of the last living veterans paying tribute to LaFayette in a parade when LaFayette returned to America in 1824.

One of Margaret's paternal great-grandfathers, Elmes Foster, wove the coronation robes of George III. Elmes' wife was the granddaughter of Mrs. Salmon who had owned the wax works of Fleet Street in London. Margaret's brother was the actor, author and artist, Gabriel Harrison.
