Elwood Porter "Woody" Bailey, 71, of Surgoinsville, TN, passed away Monday, November 27, 2006, at his residence.

Born in Hawkins County, TN; son of the late Samuel Presley Bailey (1893–1953) and Willie Ettna Christian Bailey (1904–2005); husband of Dorothy Couch Bailey for 49 years.

Became a Mason in 1964 and was a current member of Clay Lodge #386, earned his 32 Degree Scottish Rites belonging to the Jericho Temple in Kingsport, and the Rogersville Shrine. Worked with Hall's Crippled Children in Lexington, KY; served in the U.S. Navy for eight years, serving in the Korean War, and also served in the Merchant Marine. Belonged to the Church Hill VFW #9754 and American Legion Post #21 in Rogersville.

Attended the First Baptist Church in Surgoinsville and retired from Yellow Freight Trucking in Overton, KA.

Other survivors include a son, Tony Lee Bailey (Susan); sisters, Louise Lois Bailey Britton (1928-2011) and Odell Bailey Shortt (1926-2012); brothers, Ralph Colvin Bailey (1932–2009) and Lloyd Clinton Bailey (1937–2019); several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Also preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Lee Bailey Artis (1924–2005) and Billie Ruth Bailey Hensley (1930-1984).

The family received friends from 5:00 - 7:00 pm, Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill, TN.

Military graveside service was held at 11:00 am, Thursday, November 30, 2006, at Jonesville Memorial Gardens in Jonesville, SC conducted by Rev. Robert Alexander.

Memorials were made to First Baptist Church, Surgoinsville, TN.
