Mary Hopley was born July 14, 1819, the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Shone) Hopley from Flintshire, Whales. She was baptized on February 14, 1820 in Cheshire, England. She married Allen Harper in Liverpool, England November 17, 1839. They came to the United States with their four children, Eliza, Frederick, John and Mary Ann in 1847. They lived for several years in New York State, where their son Allen was born, before moving to Illinois and four more children were born, Richard, who died as a baby, Samuel and the twins Joseph and Sarah. They farmed there for many years. Allen and Mary relocated to Nebraska to be close to their sons Frederick and John. Mary passed away June 17, 1891. She is buried in Rose Creek Cemetery Thayer Co., Nebraska.
