Many people claim he was the son of Robert Strother and Elizabeth Berry. However, James was not named in the will of Robert Strother, so it is doubtful that he was his son.

James married Martha French. She was the widow of William Floweree, who had died around 1741. (NOTE: Her maiden name may have been Rout.)

Martha had a son with William Floweree named William Daniel Routt Floweree (born 1738), who later became a Captain in the Revolutionary War and a very wealthy man.

James and Martha had four sons: Reuben (born 1750); James (born 1752); Benjamin (born 1755); and William (born 1756).

James, his wife, their sons, and Martha's son from her first marriage, William Daniel Routt Floweree, left King George County, sometime before 1766, and migrated to Fauquier County, Virginia. James bought 218 acres on Sept. 25, 1766. He raised bees on his farm.

James died in the late summer of 1778. On Sept. 28, 1778, his widow Martha and his son Reuben were granted a certificate for obtaining letters of administration for his estate. The inventory was appraised on Nov. 23, 1778 for 1,899 pounds, 19 shillings, and 6 pence.

He was probably buried on his farm in Fauquier Cunty.
