He was the son of James Strother and Martha French.

He married Susannah Bartlett around 1770. She was the daughter of Thomas Bartlett and Ann Settle.

Reuben and Susannah had twelve children: Sarah (born 1773); Nancy Ann (born 1775); Reuben Jr. (born 1777); Thomas B. (born 1779); Susannah (born 1781); Charlotte (born 1783); French (born 1785); John (born 1787); Mary (born 1789); William W. (born 1791); Lucinda (born 1793); and Patsy (born 1795).

In 1801, Reuben built his home in Fauquier County. He called it "Rosemont." It was a one-room stone building with a stone fireplace. There was a one-room stone kitchen out in the backyard. He carved his initials "R.S" and the year "1801" on one of the stones in the kitchen.

His house is still standing today, although it has been added onto quite a bit. It is located along Route 702, about two miles north of Marshall, Virginia.

Reuben wrote his will on January 22, 1836. It was proven on February 27, 1837, and so it is believed that he died in early 1837. His wife Susannah had died in 1823. They were probably buried on their farm.
