Hannah was the sixth child of Abraham HUFFORD and Elizabeth PLANK. She was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, and moved to Carroll County, Indiana, with her family in the fall of 1833 when she was 10 years old. Like each of her siblings, Hannah's father gave her 160 acres of land about the time she turned 21 years old; that would have been in February 1844. Her father's land was in Carroll County and Clinton County, Indiana, in the area near Rossville.

Hannah has not been located on the 1850 or 1860 census. It is not likely that a 21-year-old woman who had 160 acres of good land would have had a hard time finding a husband in that time and place. In 1850, Hannah was 27 and likely married; in 1860, she was 37. It is likely that she is hiding in plain sight behind a married name. It is possible that a search of land transfer records would turn up some information.

On May 12, 1861, in Carroll County, Indiana, Hannah married Samuel MELLINGER, a widower with five children, ages 2, 5, 8, 14, and 15. Samuel's wife and one daughter had died in September 1860. Hannah was 38; Samuel was 43. Their daughter Lydia was born in 1866; she died in 1874 at eight years old. Samuel died in 1878. In both 1880 and 1900, Hannah was living by herself, listed in the household below that of a son from Samuel Mellinger's first marriage. Before 1909, Hannah moved to Henry County, Indiana, where she lived in an old folks and orphans home operated by the Brethren Church. According to the 1910 census, she had birthed only one child, and the child was dead.
