Wendell P. Glick, 87, died peacefully in his home Saturday, July 19, 2003. He was born March 22, 1916, the eldest of twelve children to Effie Evers Glick, and John Titus Glick, in Evanston, Ill.

Wendell attended school in Timberville and Bridgewater, Va., and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va. In 1950 he received a PhD in English from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. In 1948 he married Barbara Wagner of Union City, Ind.

They moved to Duluth in 1952, where Wendell taught in the English Department at the University of Minnesota, Duluth until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of the Thoreau Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Men as Peacemakers, served on the Arrowhead Library Board and was a mentor at Grant School. He continued to teach in UMD's University for Seniors until shortly before his death.

Wendell believed and taught that works of great literature act as moral and ethical guideposts for people to follow. His life-long devotion to literature, particularly the transcendentalists Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, continued even during his declining health. He could always be cajoled into some philosophical or political observation, usually tinged with wisdom and wit.

Besides his parents; he was preceded in death by his grandson Brian Glick; his brothers Paul and Donald; and sister Dawn Phibbs.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Catherine Glick (Curtis Nelson); sons Stephen (Glenn Sommer), Daniel, Edward (Gina), and Thomas; granddaughter Tamara Glick; and great-grandson Tyler Glick; brothers Victor, John, Wayne, Joe, and Stanley; sisters Elizabeth Glick-Rieman, Margaret Hunkins, Ruth Welliver; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a private memorial service and burial in Bethany Cemetery. Friends, colleagues and former students are invited to a gathering in the former Campus Club Griggs Center, second floor of Kirby Student Center at UMD Tuesday, July 22, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. to celebrate Wendell's life. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Arrowhead Library Board or the CHUM Food Shelf. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. 2nd Street.
