Marel Decker Bradshaw, 78, died Aug. 2, 1996, at his home in Panaca, Nev.
Bradshaw was born Dec. 23, 1917, in Parowan, Utah. He was the eldest of nine children born to Rufus Bradshaw and Ona Agolda Decker Bradshaw.
Being the oldest brother and living through the Depression in his early years shaped much of what he became as a man. He worked side by side with his father and learned many skills while he was growing up. He herded sheep, farmed and worked in the mines. Many summers were spent herding sheep in the mountains above Parowan. He also hunted and fished there. He continued to love those mountains and returned to fish at the Yankee Meadows and the Mammoth Creek throughout his life.
He attended school in Parowan until he graduated from high school. He excelled in his carpentry and mechanical drawing classes. He loved playing basketball and dancing and had a good singing voice.
After Marel graduated high school in 1937, he and his father and two cousins went to Delamar to work in the mines. It was while working in Delamar that he met and married Delsa Winsor from Panaca, Nev. They were married Feb. 20, 1940. They lived in a two-room stone cabin until March 1942. They left Delamar and moved to Pioche where they lived for most of the next 13 years. Marel worked in the mines around Pioche and also used his carpentry and brick laying skills. He was good at his work and evidence of his craft remains throughout the area.
In 1959, Marel and his family moved to Panaca. Marel built a new home for his family and planted a big garden, which was one of his goals. He raised a big garden every year for the next 36 years.
Delsa died in 1972 from cancer and Marel married Jobyna Schlarman Bringman on June 9, 1973. Jobyna died with cancer in March of 1982 and Marel married Ida Zabriskie Stewart on Nov. 4, 1983. This marriage ended in divorce in 1988. Marel then married Filemena Salazar Heddleston on Feb. 14, 1991.
Marel loved his family and kept close contact with all his brother and sisters throughout the years. He greatly felt the loss of his sister, Alda Mae Blad, and brother Larry and Von.
He is survived by wife Filey of Panaca; children Gerald of San Diego, Calif., Colleen Flinspach of Modena, Utah, Joyce Slack of Cedar City, Utah, and Kenneth of Elkhart, Ind.; stepchildren Francey Dennis of Reno, Nev., Teresa Topps of Ogden, Utah, and Katrina Sagers and Peter Huddleston of Cedar City, Utah; sisters Noma Edwards of Salt Lake City, Utah, Marie Barnett of Caliente and Iona Reese of Mustang, Oklahoma; brothers Dwain of Beaver, Utah, and Floyd of Winnemucca, Nev. He had 30 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Aug. 8, 1996, at the Panaca L.D.S. Church where he had been an active member. Burial was in the Panaca Cemetery.
