Leroy D. Hoover, 89, Roaring Spring, died Friday morning at Nason Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born in Cross Keys, son of the late Charles W. and Lottie F. (Brubaker) Hoover.
On Dec. 7, 1946, he married Ruth N. Brindle in Roaring Spring, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 2009.
Surviving are two children: Diana Walls of Roaring Spring and Carl Hoover, a resident at The Village at Morrisons Cove; six grandchildren: Bryan Hoover, Julie Dively, Brenda Fruchtl, Holly Metzler, Travis Frye and Justin Walls; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Hoover of Harrisburg.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald R. Hoover; four brothers: Loris, Homer, Ralph and infant brother, Carl; and three sisters: Elva Metzker, Dora Cochran and Betty Claar-Steele.
Leroy was a 1944 graduate of Roaring Spring High School and had served in the U.S. Army. He retired from the A&P warehouse with more than 40 years of service and, after his retirement, he worked at Hinish Orchards, Roaring Spring.
He enjoyed camping, hunting and volunteering for many different community organizations. He was a member of First Church of the Brethren, Roaring Spring, where he served as deacon emeritus in addition to serving on the church board and being active in the men's fellowship. He was also a 64-year member of North Woodbury Grange, a life member of Friendship Volunteer Fire Department, Roaring Spring, and a longtime member of Roaring Spring Lions Club.
He was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he served as scoutmaster for Troop 67 and other positions within the organization for many years. Additionally, he was a board member and past president of Morrisons Cove Memorial Park Board of Directors, serving on many committees, and he served on the board of directors for Diehl's Crossroads Cemetery, Martinsburg. He was well known for his chicken barbecue expertise, and he prepared barbecues for many organizations within the community.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at First Church of the Brethren, Roaring Spring, where a Lions memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. and a fireman's memorial service will be held at 8:30 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at the church, Pastor Dale Dowdy officiating, followed by military honors performed by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard.
Interment will be made in Diehl's Crossroads Cemetery, Martinsburg. Arrangements are by the Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Leroy's memory may be given to First Church of the Brethren, 901 Bloomfield S., Roaring Spring, PA 16673.
