Son of Peter Hoyle (Peiter Heyl) and Catherine Dales Hoyle.

Husband of Margaret Costner Hoyle.

Patriot John Hoyl, the youngest child of German emigrant Peiter Heyl, was born in 1740. He married Margaret Rebecca Costner in 1763, and they had 13 children. John fought the Cherokee Indians before the Revolutionary War, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He fought with Colonel Hambright before and during the Revolutionary War. With his military background, John Hoyl would have been encouraged to use his skills in the strengthening Patriot cause in North Carolina, after 1780.

On June 22, 1780, John fought in the Battle of Ramsour's Mill in Lincoln County. The battle was significant in that several hundred Patriot militia defeated Loyalist militia more than three times their size. John had relatives supporting both sides of the battle. Loyalist brother-in-law Peter Costner was killed while Patriot brother-in-law Thomas Costner survived the battle. John's brother Michael furnished supplies to the Patriots.

John Hoyl died in 1822 and is buried at Grace Reformed and Lutheran Church, just outside Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina.
