James was the 12th child, out of 13, born to Colonel Alexander and Catharine (White) Patrick. Oddly enough these two children are the only ones that seemed to die before their time. Family history fails us when it comes to James and his younder brother Thomas, because the cause of their deaths is lost in time. James listed himself, as a Trader in the 1860 Census, as he was also the Census Takers, Assistant Marshal.
