William Wayne Sharkey, 83, of Burlington, died at his residence.

He was born to William A. Sharkey and Ernestine Hester Sharkey Lyman. On July 8, 1945, he married Mary Elizabeth Swan in Burlington.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1941 and attended Burlington Junior College and Milwaukee State Teachers College. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran, serving from 1942 to 1946. He was a prisoner of war from 1944 to 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart, Prisoner of War Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He was an associate in ministry for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and business administrator at Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington from 1960 to 1990. He was an emeritus member of the National Association of Church Business Administration. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington, a former member of the Burlington Lions Club, and past president of the Des Moines County Heart Association. He served as treasurer of the Christian Action Committee of Burlington for many years.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Susan G. Hinz of Ann Arbor, Michigan; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; half brother, John Sharkey of Port Saint Lucie, Florida; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, and one half brother.

The funeral service was held at Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. Donald Hoornstra officiating. The Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton Walters Marine Corps League, and the AMVETS Post 29 will conduct military rites.
