He was born on March 20, 1928, in Tiny, Virginia to the late Wm. Dewey and Alica Bertie Sutherland. Omar worked in the coal mines of Virginia before joining the United States Army where he served two tours during the Korean War.
Omar moved to Ohio to marry the love of his life, Mavis E. Fuller, on November 4, 1950.
For 42 years, Omar worked at HPM until his retirement in 1993. He also served his community on the Auxiliary Police Department and as a Sheriff's special deputy. Omar enjoyed playing in the Sugar Creek Bluegrass Band, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and belonged to the Mount Gilead V.F.W. Post 8054.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years; daughters: Karen Kay Conrad of Galion, Debbie Jordan of Chesterville, and Peggy Jaggers of Marion; grandchildren: Adam Jordan, Heidi (Bob) Foreman, Carrie (Scott) Wolford, Brandi Conrad, and Austin Jaggers; 5 great-grandchildren; siblings: Lenis Thomas, Nina Rice, Adron Sutherland, Glenn Sutherland, and Carol Breeding; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Omar was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 2 sisters; and 2 son-in-laws: Chuck Conrad and Alfred Jordan.
His family will greet friends on Monday, August 31, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main Street, Mount Gilead. Services honoring his life will be held there on Tuesday, September 1, at 11:00 a.m., with Elder Darvin Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery with full military honors being provided by the Army active duty, VFW Post 8054, and AmVets Post 87.
