Born February 10, 1932 in Haysi, Virginia to W. Dewey and A. Bertie (Fuller) Sutherland, he had been a Ganges-Shiloh area resident for the past 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. Gale was employed with General Motors in Ontario retiring after 33 years of service. He then worked with Goodwill Industries in Mansfield. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and cutting wood.
Survivors include his daughters Lana (Dan) Armstrong of Clearwater, FLorida, Bonnie Petty of Clearwater, FLorida, Dawn (J.R.) Rice of Shelby and Lynn Sutherland-Johnson of Ventura, California; one step-son, Paul (Melinda) Mays of Maitland, Florida; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three brothers, Omar (Mavis) Sutherland, Adron (Ann Gail) Sutherland, Glenn (Audrey) Sutherland; three sisters, Lenis (Beldon) Thomas, Nina (Everette) Rice, Carol (Victor) Breeding, special brother-in-law Herb Harden, close friend Marty Jr., as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Elnora May Sutherland, three brothers and two sisters.
Gale was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday June 23, 2015 at the Barkdull Funeral Home and Crematory in Shelby. Interment will follow in Ganges Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
